Medicare Advantage in El Paso for 2027: What to Review Before December 7
For El Paso Medicare beneficiaries, the best annual plan review starts with doctors, prescriptions, total costs, and the December 7 deadline.
Every fall, television commercials and mailers promise new Medicare benefits. Some mention dental allowances. Others spotlight prescription savings or extra services. For an El Paso resident, those headlines may be worth investigating, but they don't answer the question that matters most: will this particular plan work with the doctors, prescriptions, and care you actually use?
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026, for changes effective January 1, 2027. It is the annual opportunity for many people with Medicare to review and change their Medicare Advantage or Part D arrangements.
Start with the care you already receive
If you have a primary care physician you trust, a cardiologist you see regularly, or a hospital you prefer, put that information at the top of your comparison. Medicare Advantage plans use networks and service-area rules, and two plans from the same insurer may have different participating doctors.
Provider directories are useful starting points, but if an appointment is especially important, verify participation for the exact plan and upcoming plan year. Check whether referrals or prior authorization are required for the services you expect to use.
El Paso residents should also think carefully about cross-border medical habits. A U.S. Medicare Advantage plan generally should not be assumed to pay for routine care in Mexico. Emergency and urgently needed care rules may differ from routine international coverage, so check the Evidence of Coverage rather than relying on an advertisement.
Prescription coverage deserves its own review
A plan with a low premium can still cost more overall when its formulary, preferred pharmacy arrangements, or drug tiers don't fit your prescriptions. Make a current medication list with dosage and frequency, then compare estimated annual drug costs across plans.
A prescription that was inexpensive this year might be subject to different utilization management or cost-sharing next year. The details can be found in the plan's 2027 documents and the official Medicare Plan Finder.

Look beyond the premium
Many Medicare Advantage plans advertise a $0 plan premium. That doesn't mean all care is free, and beneficiaries generally must continue paying their Medicare Part B premium unless another program pays it for them.
Compare primary and specialist visit costs, hospital copays, out-of-pocket limits for covered Part A and Part B services, and the plan's rules for out-of-network care. Supplemental benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, or transportation can be valuable, but they may have annual limits, network restrictions, and eligibility criteria.
If you receive Medicaid or other assistance, a coordinated or special-needs plan may be relevant. Eligibility and plan availability are individual questions, not assumptions to make from the ZIP code alone.
Read the Annual Notice of Change
If you're already enrolled in Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan, the insurer sends an Annual Notice of Change explaining what will differ in the next plan year. Don't leave it unopened.
Pay attention to changes in copays, drug coverage, networks, supplemental benefits, and premiums. A familiar plan name can create a false sense that nothing important has changed.
When changing coverage isn't the right move
Sometimes the best result of a review is to keep what you have. If your current plan continues to cover the providers and drugs you need at a manageable total cost, switching just for one extra advertised benefit may not be worthwhile.
Switching from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare also raises separate decisions about Part D and Medigap. In Texas, outside certain protections and enrollment rights, Medigap policies can be subject to underwriting. Don't assume you can add a Medicare supplement on identical terms at any time.
Make the December 7 deadline count
The Baylon Agency helps Medicare-eligible clients in El Paso understand the differences between their available choices. A sound plan review is less about flashy extras and more about whether the coverage still supports the way you receive care.
Gather your current plan information, medication list, preferred providers, and the 2027 change notice. Then compare the actual terms before making a decision.
